Be conscious
- Each year, people consume more than 80 billion pieces of new clothing, making the clothing industry one of the world’s biggest polluters.
- After the clothing is used, almost all the value in the materials they are made from is lost.
- 15% percent of all unwanted garments are collected while the vast majority, 85%, ends up in landfills.
- Less than 1% of the material used to produce clothing is recycled into new clothing, which is equal to more than USD 100 billion worth of materials lost to disposal each year.
♻️ If we increase demand for recycled materials through clear commitments to using more recycled input, we can accelerate the uptake of clothing recycling! Credits to WRW Canada.
What is fast fashion?
Fast fashion is defined by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation as a fast turnaround of new styles, increased number of collections offered per season, and significantly lower prices. Although sales are increasing, the utilization of each clothing item is continuing to fall drastically, with the average number of times a garment is worn decreasing by 36% in the last 15 years. Be reasonable in clothing consumption and consider purchasing second-hand clothing. Reuse, repurpose, and recycle!
Tips on how to prolong the life of your clothes
- Wash your clothes on the coldest and gentlest cycle you can. Check the label on your clothes for directions. Overall, minimum detergent and low heat impact are better for the longevity of the fabric.
- Minimize the use of the dryer. Hanging your clothes to dry is the best option. This will also lower the need for ironing.
- Donate! Check your wardrobe for items that no longer fit or for those that you simply don’t like anymore. Then, book a free donation pick-up via the link in bio
